DEALING WITH WANDERING THOUGHTS DURING PRAYERS

Studies have proven that humans have short attention span. This is also applicable during prayers. We have a lot of things on our minds; office work, school work, what to eat, how to multiply income and million of things keep running through our minds at every point in time.

It is important to not only watch these thoughts but also deal with them while we are praying. We want to eliminate all forms of distractions and focus on one thing/task per time. A good way to achieving this is by decluttering the mind from all worries and thought. We need to reposition our minds to what we are doing; which is praying. Also, we can turn off all phone notifications during prayers in order to fully concentrate.

Another means to controlling distractive thoughts is by converting those thoughts to prayer requests. We think or worry over anything. Usually, the reason why this occurs is because we need help, we need solutions to these things that might be posing a sort of challenge or issue for us. Mark 11:24 says whenever we ask in prayer to God, we shall receive them. Given this, we can turn the wandering thoughts into prayer points knowing fully well that we serve a prayer-answering God.

Write out your prayers and pray them aloud. Speaking out, not just praying inwardly or under one’s breath helps one to be conscious of the prayer activity and in turn focus is achieved.

The Word of God is alive and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword dividing the soul and spirit and exposes the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12) We must endeavor to always pray using the bible. It is our manual; our only guide! Meditating on the Word (especially the book of Psalms) does not only help overcome brooding but also helps in laying off every thought that contradicts God’s will over our lives.

In conclusion, we need to be active both spiritually and even physically during prayers. Move around, clap your hands. Engage in physical movements if you have to, to wade off all distractions.
